Portuguese independence was recognized in 1143, in the Treaty of Zamora by the representative of the Pope.
Although, Portugal was independent since 1128, after D. Afonso Henriques won the Battle of S. Mamede against his mother D. Teresa, and proclaimed the territory as a sovereign state.
